I've been talking to strangers professionally for decades. As an academic librarian who worked with the public, I interviewed thousands of people, using journalism and communication techniques to quickly figure out what they needed, what was missing, and what they wanted to achieve. 

In my work, I noticed that communication mishaps affected entire organizations, not just individuals. Feedback often came from a small, vocal group of customers while other feedback was ignored. Companies might have chased the "next big thing" and forgotten the basics that mattered to their customers. Plus, the language they used could differ from how customers described things. These simple but important gaps were easy to miss.

To help prevent these kinds of mishaps, I now support organizations in identifying and addressing overlooked issues.
